Madison Square Garden Sports on Monday announced the appointment of David Hopkinson to the role of executive vice president MSG Sports, president team business operations. Hopkinson has more than 25 years of experience in the sports industry, having previously worked as the global head of partnerships for Real Madrid Club de Futbol, and in various roles over a 20 year period for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, owners of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, and Toronto FC.
In his new role, Hopkinson will be responsible for the commercial strategy of multiple MSG Sports properties including the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, development league teams the Westchester Knicks and Hartford Wolf Pack; and esports teams under the umbrella of Counter Logic Gaming and Knicks Gaming, an NBA 2K League franchise. This includes handling the business operations for the teams that include “strategic planning, marketing, ticketing, and the in-game experience, as well as community and fan development.”
Hopkinson replaces Kristin Bernert, who announced earlier this year her plans to leave her role as executive vice president of sports operations.
In August, Madison Square Garden Sports cut 50 jobs, or roughly 15% of its corporate staff due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on live, in-person events.
